Thiruvananthapuram, June 5: PT Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), has expressed concern over Kerala’s diminishing status as a “nursery of sports” in India. Once a leader in the sports arena, the state now struggles to maintain its former glory. Usha highlighted that the lack of sports infrastructure and delays in administrative processes are significant barriers to the development of sports in Kerala.
In a conversation with reporters, Usha reflected on her active years, stating that Kerala was among the top states on the national sports map, frequently securing first or second place in competitions. However, the current situation is disheartening, with the state’s ranking in athletics and other sports plummeting to the 10th or 11th position. She emphasized that this decline is particularly troubling given Kerala’s historical contribution to Indian sports.
Usha raised concerns about the availability of sports facilities in the state, noting that many projects are stalled due to technical issues and approval processes. For instance, Thrissur, a district known for producing numerous international athletes, still lacks a 400-meter synthetic athletics track. She mentioned that she has discussed these issues with officials and has sought assistance from the Prime Minister.
She also pointed out that several key initiatives related to sports, such as the concept of sports schools and divisions, originated in Kerala. Usha herself studied in a sports division, which played a crucial role in shaping her career.
Additionally, Usha highlighted the significance of the “Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Fun Run 2026” and Olympic Day. Celebrated annually on June 23, Olympic Day promotes values such as excellence, friendship, and respect, encouraging people to engage in sports and adopt a healthy lifestyle. This year, the Asian Olympic Council is organizing a fun run alongside the Olympic Run.
Usha announced plans to hold a high-level meeting with the Chief Minister and senior officials to discuss the development of sports in the state. Topics will include improving sports infrastructure, talent development, and enhancing sports policies, aiming to re-establish Kerala as a leading sports hub in the country.
