Political Race Intensifies in Tamil Nadu: Palaniswami Assures Legislators of AIADMKs Future Government

Chennai, May 8: Amid uncertainty regarding the new government in Tamil Nadu, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami has made a significant statement. He assured his legislators that the AIADMK will ultimately form the next government in the state.

No party has secured an outright majority in Tamil Nadu this time. Actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam, has won 108 seats but requires at least 10 more legislators to form a government. Without a majority, the Governor has not granted Vijay the opportunity to form a government.

In this context, Palaniswami’s claims have sparked speculation about new political alignments in Tamil Nadu. The AIADMK has currently accommodated its legislators at a luxury resort in the neighboring state of Puducherry.

According to party sources, Palaniswami met with party legislators at the resort late Thursday night to discuss the rapidly changing political landscape in Tamil Nadu. During the meeting, he was reportedly chosen as the leader of the AIADMK legislative party. The legislators expressed their support for his leadership by submitting signed letters.

Sources revealed that Palaniswami instilled confidence among the legislators, urging them to “wait patiently.” He reiterated that the AIADMK will form the government in Tamil Nadu.

The AIADMK is a constituent of the NDA, having won 47 seats in the 2026 assembly elections. Of the party’s 47 legislators, approximately 28 are currently staying at the Puducherry resort. AMMK legislator S. Kamaraj, who won from Mannargudi, is also reportedly staying with the AIADMK faction.

Sources indicated that the resort rooms have been booked for the next seven days, and the legislators have been advised not to leave the resort premises without prior permission.

Political uncertainty deepened after Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar reportedly stated that any party or coalition capable of proving the necessary numbers would be invited to form the government. Reports also suggest that if a compromise occurs between DMK and AIADMK, TVK legislators may consider resigning en masse.
