Aizawl, May 17: The Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Nimuben Jayanthi Bhai Bhamaniya, stated on Saturday that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, approximately 810 million people across the country are receiving free rations, surpassing the entire population of Europe.
He emphasized that providing free rations to 810 million people constitutes the world’s largest food security program.
Speaking at an event in Aizawl, the minister highlighted Mizoram’s unique indigenous products and rich cultural heritage. He mentioned the GI-tagged Mizo ginger and Mizo chili, along with the world-renowned Cheraw dance.
However, he clarified that his visit was not solely to appreciate the state’s beauty and achievements but also to closely understand Mizoram’s challenges and extend all possible support.
Referring to the Prime Minister’s vision of “Food for All,” Bhamaniya assured that every effort would be made to ensure that all people in Mizoram receive adequate and quality food grains.
The minister praised the initiatives and achievements of Mizoram’s Department of Food, Consumer Affairs, and Civil Supplies. He noted that systems like e-KYC, e-POS, and Smart PDS have greatly benefited the state’s residents.
He acknowledged that heavy monsoon rains in the northeastern region often disrupt road connectivity. In light of this, he expressed a desire to assist northeastern states by allocating three months’ worth of rations in advance before the onset of the monsoon.
Bhamaniya also assured that he would convey Mizoram’s issues to the Union Minister of Food and Public Distribution, Prahlad Joshi, and ensure a meeting for further discussions.
This dialogue event was organized by Mizoram’s Department of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs in honor of the Union Minister.
On this occasion, Mizoram’s Minister of Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, B. Lalchhanhzowa, expressed gratitude for the central minister’s visit and personal assessment of the state’s challenges.
He thanked the central government and the Food Corporation of India (FCI) for their continuous support in ensuring regular food supply in the state.
Lalchhanhzowa requested the central minister to consider increasing the state’s National Food Security Act (NFSA) quota to strengthen food supply and achieve the goal of “Food for All.”
During the event, Sandeep Devra, General Manager of FCI for the northeastern region, also delivered a PowerPoint presentation on various initiatives related to food supply and storage in Mizoram, addressing the current situation, challenges, and solutions.
