Bhagalpur, May 17: The Bihar government’s Livelihood Self-Help Groups and the central government’s Pradhan Mantri Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PM-FME) scheme have transformed the lives of rural women. A shining example of this change is Lalita Devi from Vishanpur Jichho village in Bhagalpur district, who is now known as ‘Lakhpati Didi.’
Once struggling in extreme poverty, Lalita worked as a domestic helper while raising her four children. Balancing household responsibilities was a daunting challenge. However, joining the Livelihood group brought a new light into her life. Like many women in her village, she possessed traditional skills in making pickles, papads, and snacks, which she turned into a business.
Lalita applied for a loan of five lakh rupees under the PM-FME scheme. Initially, she received two lakh rupees in support, which enabled her to start a small-scale pickle and papad business. Today, her enterprise is thriving. Not only is she earning well, but she is also providing employment opportunities to other women in her village.
Speaking about her journey, Lalita said, “Earlier, no one knew us, but now we have made a name in Bhagalpur. I sincerely thank the state and central governments. When I received the two lakh rupees, it gave me the courage to do something. With this money, I started my business. I have four daughters whom I am educating. With further financial support from the scheme, I plan to expand my business. The government has launched a wonderful initiative that has turned poor women into Lakhpati Didis.”
She shared that previously, people mocked her, questioning how she would manage her daughters’ education and marriages amidst such poverty. Now, the situation has completely changed. Her three daughters are not only studying but also helping in the business. With the family’s financial condition improving, their future looks bright.
The Livelihood program has become a significant means of empowering women in Bihar. Under the PM-FME scheme, women are benefiting from financial assistance, training, branding, and market access. Many women like Lalita Devi have become self-reliant and are now sources of inspiration for others.
