Amsterdam, May 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited the renowned Afsluitdijk Dam in the Netherlands, commending its innovative water management techniques. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted similarities between this dam and the proposed Kalpsar project in Gandhinagar, India.
During the visit, PM Modi and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte explored the dam, which is celebrated for its role in flood control and land reclamation. Modi stated that the Netherlands has made significant advancements in water resource management, offering valuable lessons for the world. He expressed gratitude to the Dutch Prime Minister for the insights gained from the visit.
Modi emphasized that India is actively working to adopt modern technologies for irrigation, flood control, and the expansion of inland waterways.
Following the visit, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement underscoring the shared commitment of both nations to collaborate on innovations in water management, climate adaptation, and sustainable infrastructure. The 32-kilometer-long dam serves as a global benchmark in flood control and provides protection to the Dutch coastline from the North Sea while facilitating freshwater storage.
The visit also drew parallels between the Afsluitdijk and India’s ambitious Kalpsar project, which aims to create a vast freshwater reservoir in the Gulf of Khambhat, integrating tidal energy production, irrigation, and transport infrastructure development.
In this context, both parties signed a letter of intent for technical cooperation on the Kalpsar project between India’s Ministry of Water Power and the Netherlands’ Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
Both leaders acknowledged that Dutch hydraulic engineering expertise combined with India’s capacity for large-scale project implementation could unlock new mutually beneficial partnerships. This visit further strengthened the India-Netherlands water strategic partnership, reaffirming their shared commitment to innovation and sustainable development.
