Venkatesh Iyer Celebrates Batting Opportunity Over Player of the Match Award

Dharamshala, May 17: Venkatesh Iyer emerged as the hero in the IPL 2026 match between Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) held at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium on Sunday. The explosive left-handed batsman played a crucial role in RCB’s victory, scoring an unbeaten 73 runs off 40 balls, leading his team to a 23-run win. For his outstanding performance, he was awarded the Player of the Match.

After the match, Iyer expressed his joy, stating, “Technically, this is my second match as part of the playing eleven. I finally got a proper chance to bat. I am happier about this opportunity than receiving the Man of the Match award. The team earned two points, and that truly makes me very happy.”

Reflecting on his slow start but strong finish, Iyer said, “Yes, the beginning was a bit slow, but I was fortunate to bat alongside Virat Kohli. His insights on mindset are incredible. I believe that one key trait of all great players is their communication, which is truly special.”

When discussing batting conditions in Dharamshala, Iyer noted, “I have played here before. This season, it has been a while since I played a match. I needed a few initial balls to find my rhythm. Once I understood the wicket and was allowed to play freely against the bowlers, I felt it went well for me.”

On waiting for his chance at RCB, Iyer admitted, “If I say I wasn’t disappointed or didn’t want to play, that would be a lie. I genuinely wanted to play because for players like us, getting a chance in the IPL is the biggest deal. We want to perform well. However, I have been here long enough to understand that this is a champion team, and frequently changing the team balance isn’t always right. I have always tried to make an impact on the coaching staff so that they would give me a chance to perform. I am glad I finally got my opportunity.”

Discussing his transition from KKR to RCB, Iyer remarked, “They welcomed me very well. It’s a highly professional team, both in cricket and management. Credit goes to Mo Bobat and Dinesh Karthik for how they have taken care of all the players. The way RCB plays excites me a lot. I spent considerable time at KKR, so there will always be an emotional connection, but I truly feel at home here.”

Looking at the match, RCB batted first, scoring 222 runs for 4 wickets, while Punjab Kings managed only 199 runs for 8 wickets, losing by 23 runs.
