V.D. Satheesan Unveils 20-Member UDF Cabinet in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, May 17: V.D. Satheesan, the newly appointed Chief Minister of Kerala, announced a 20-member United Democratic Front (UDF) cabinet on Sunday. This announcement puts an end to days of discussions regarding representation, regional balance, and the involvement of allied parties. The swearing-in ceremony for the new government is scheduled for Monday.

The new cabinet features a blend of experienced leaders and fresh faces. It includes representatives from key UDF allies such as the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Kerala Congress, and other component parties.

Among the ministers in Satheesan’s cabinet are Ramesh Chennithala, Sany Joseph, K. Muraleedharan, A.P. Anil Kumar, P.C. Vishnunath, Roji M. John, Bindu Krishna, M. Liju, T. Siddiqi, K.A. Thulasi, and O.J. Janish from Congress.

From IUML, P.K. Kunhalikutty, N. Samsudheen, K.M. Shaji, P.K. Basheer, and V.E. Abdul Gafoor have secured cabinet positions.

Additionally, Mons Joseph from Kerala Congress (Joseph), Shibu Baby John from the Revolutionary Socialist Party, Anoop Jacob from Kerala Congress (Jacob), and C.P. John from the Communist Marxist Party have also been appointed as ministers.

Sources indicate that despite leading the alliance to a significant victory, Satheesan expressed some disappointment over the limited cabinet representation for Congress. It is reported that the designated Chief Minister raised concerns that although Congress won 63 seats in the assembly, only 11 of its leaders could be included in the cabinet due to coalition dynamics and power-sharing constraints.

Meanwhile, IUML state president Syed Sadik Ali Shihab Thangal announced that senior leader Parakkal Abdullah will be included in the cabinet after the first half of the government’s term. This decision aims to ensure representation for Kozhikode district in the cabinet. Thangal also formally confirmed the names of five IUML ministers in the new government.

The swearing-in ceremony for the new government will take place on Monday morning at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, marking the beginning of a new political chapter in Kerala following UDF’s resounding electoral victory.
