Gothenburg, May 17: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was warmly welcomed by Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson upon his arrival at Gothenburg Airport. During this visit, PM Modi will discuss strengthening India-Sweden relations in areas such as trade, investment, innovation, and defense.
In a post on his social media account, PM Modi stated, “I have arrived in Gothenburg, Sweden. I will meet Prime Minister Kristersson to advance our friendship in trade, investment, innovation, defense, and other sectors. Along with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, I will meet leaders from the European business community at the ‘European Business Roundtable Conference.’ This will also strengthen investment ties between India and Europe.”
According to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), both leaders will review all aspects of bilateral relations during the visit and explore new avenues for enhancing trade between the two nations.
Trade between India and Sweden reached $7.75 billion in 2025, with Swedish investments in India amounting to $2.825 billion from 2000 to 2025.
PM Modi and Kristersson, along with Ursula von der Leyen, will address the European Roundtable for Industry, a key platform for major European industrialists and companies.
This marks PM Modi’s second visit to Sweden, following his first attendance at the India-Nordic Summit in 2018.
Anurag Bhushan, India’s Ambassador to Sweden, emphasized the significance of PM Modi’s visit and highlighted the unique characteristics of Gothenburg. He noted that the Prime Minister is visiting at the invitation of Ulf Kristersson and will also engage with the Swedish business community. This visit is particularly important as it is the first time an Indian Prime Minister is visiting this beautiful city, which was founded in 1620 and has become a hub for technology, industry, and innovation in Sweden. The presence of a large Indian community here adds to the visit’s importance.
