Ship Carrying 20,000 Tons of LPG Arrives at Kandla Amid Middle East Tensions

Mumbai, May 17: Amid escalating tensions in West Asia, a ship carrying 20,000 metric tons of LPG has safely arrived at the Deendayal Port Authority in Gujarat after navigating the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials reported that the MV SYMI, flagged under the Marshall Islands, departed from Qatar and reached Kandla Port around 11:30 PM on Saturday, following its passage through the Strait of Hormuz on May 13.

Since early March, 13 Indian-flagged vessels, including 12 LPG tankers and one crude oil tanker, have traversed the Strait of Hormuz. This narrow waterway, located near the coast of Oman, typically facilitates the transit of one-fifth of the world’s oil and gas exports on normal days.

However, the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which began on February 28, has severely impacted shipping movements through this critical passage. The United States and Israel have launched joint attacks on Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes from Iran. This conflict has resulted in one of the most severe energy crises in recent decades.

India has strongly condemned attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, labeling them as “unacceptable” during a special meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Council focused on global energy security and supply chains. India’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, stated that targeting civilian crews and disrupting freedom of navigation cannot be justified in any manner.

Harish’s remarks came just days after an attack on an Indian-flagged commercial vessel off the coast of Oman on May 13. All 14 crew members aboard the ship, which was en route from Somalia, were rescued by Omani authorities, but the identity of the attackers remains unknown.

This incident occurred amid rising tensions in West Asia and growing concerns over security in the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s energy supply passes. Since the escalation of conflict in the region earlier this year, at least two other Indian-flagged vessels have also been targeted.
