Wage Increase for Skilled and Unskilled Workers in Ladakh Announced by LG

Leh, May 17: A significant wage increase for workers in Ladakh has been announced. Under the new system, skilled workers will now earn ₹575 per day, while unskilled workers will receive ₹450 per day. This payment will be based on the amount of work performed, leading to a substantial rise in their income.

Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena shared the news on social media, stating, “This is a historic reform in Ladakh aimed at ensuring dignified wages for marginalized workers. I have ordered the rationalization of wages for daily laborers and part-time or need-based employees, such as cleaners and gardeners, who have been earning a meager ₹300 to ₹500 per month for several years across various government departments.”

The LG emphasized that he has directed a comprehensive verification of all such workers and a revision of their wages, which is to be completed within 20 days.

He further stated that the previous low wages violated the principles of social justice. “We are committed to ensuring fair and dignified wages for all workers in accordance with the provisions of the Minimum Wages Act. We also gladly acknowledge their invaluable contributions to providing essential public services throughout Ladakh,” he added.

Earlier, on April 27, Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena announced the formation of five new districts in Ladakh: Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Dras, increasing the total number of districts from two (Leh and Kargil) to seven.
