Manuel Neuers World Cup Comeback Sparks Speculation Amid Coachs Silence

Berlin, May 17: Speculation continues regarding German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 40-year-old Neuer had announced his retirement from international football following UEFA Euro 2024.

Reports from Bild and Sky suggest that Neuer’s return is likely, but German national team head coach Julian Nagelsmann has not confirmed this. However, for the first time, he has not dismissed the possibility of the Bayern Munich goalkeeper’s comeback. The final squad announcement for Germany is set for May 21.

According to reports from Bild, Sport1, Kicker, and Sky, a minor muscle injury has delayed the final announcement. This injury forced Neuer to leave the field during Bayern’s last league match against Cologne in the 60th minute as a precaution.

Sources indicate that Nagelsmann and Neuer have had several discussions, resolving past misunderstandings that arose during Nagelsmann’s tenure as Bayern’s head coach.

Many Bayern officials, including Max Eberl, have hailed Neuer as Germany’s best goalkeeper to date. Former international player Oliver Kahn noted that Hoffenheim’s goalkeeper Oliver Baumann’s performance has declined since he was named Germany’s number one a few months ago.

Former international player Stefan Effenberg criticized Nagelsmann’s risky strategy and his failure to provide clear statements. Baumann claimed he was not informed about changes to the team, complicating the situation further. The 35-year-old stated, “I believe I am still the number one goalkeeper.”

Kahn described Nagelsmann’s decision as risky and arbitrary, warning that the German coach is jeopardizing Baumann’s confidence. The former Bayern goalkeeper expressed concerns about Neuer’s age and the increasing likelihood of injuries. After Neuer extended his contract with Bayern for another year, he remarked, “Playing matches every two to three days puts a lot of pressure on the body.”
