Kolkata, May 17: Tension erupted in the Salt Lake area of Bidhannagar on Sunday when a significant number of Aadhaar cards were found at a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) office. Following the incident, a state of unrest has persisted in Ward 36 of Bidhannagar municipality since morning.
Upon receiving the information, a large police force arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation. Authorities are trying to determine how such a large quantity of Aadhaar cards ended up at the TMC office. According to police sources, local TMC leaders may also be questioned regarding the matter.
Residents allege that many individuals had submitted their documents under various pretexts, aiming to prevent them from voting.
The incident unfolded in the Basanti Devi Colony of Ward 36. Locals reported that some residents visited the party office, where they discovered numerous Aadhaar cards neatly organized inside the premises. Witnesses claim that at least 60 to 70 Aadhaar cards were recovered from the office.
As news of the incident spread, chaos and tension engulfed the area.
Community members have accused local TMC leaders of collecting Aadhaar cards under the guise of facilitating access to government schemes and services, only to withhold them later.
There are also allegations suggesting that local TMC leaders may have played a role in preventing certain individuals from voting in the recent elections.
Notably, similar incidents have been reported not only in Salt Lake but also in Nanur, where a large number of Aadhaar cards were discovered near the home of a booth-level officer (BLO).
The police have seized the Aadhaar cards from the scene and arrested the relevant BLO following an initial investigation.
Authorities are now conducting a thorough inquiry to ascertain how so many Aadhaar cards ended up there and why they were not returned to their rightful owners.
