London, September 25 (Udaipur Kiran News): Liverpool’s teenage defender Giovanni Leoni endured a nightmare debut as he picked up a suspected anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which could sideline him for the rest of the season.

The 18-year-old Italian centre-back started in Liverpool’s 2-1 Carabao Cup third-round win against Southampton on Tuesday but was forced off in the 81st minute after collapsing in pain. Initial medical reports suggest an ACL injury to his left knee, dealing a heavy blow to both the player and the club.

Leoni, signed from Parma in August for £26 million including add-ons, shared an emotional message on social media: “I am grateful to everyone supporting me in this difficult time. This was not the debut I had dreamed of, but I will do everything possible to return soon to this magical stadium.”

Manager Arne Slot also admitted the injury looked serious: “He realised straight away that it was bad. Often, a player’s emotions give you the clearest signal.”

Leoni’s absence leaves Liverpool with just three senior central defenders — Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, and Joe Gomez. Under UEFA rules, the club has the option to alter its Champions League squad, and reports suggest Federico Chiesa could be considered as an additional reinforcement.
