Mumbai, April 23:
Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, Lenovo, Honor, and other smartphone brands under the Gold Standard Alliance in China are addressing a persistent issue in Android: inconsistent performance.
The alliance has launched a new initiative aimed at reducing lag, overheating, and unexpected app crashes across Android devices.
They plan to introduce a unified memory management standard for developers, aligning with upcoming changes in Android 17. The objective is for applications to utilize memory more efficiently, regardless of the Android device in use.
Currently, there is a lack of consistency. As applications become more complex, they require additional memory. Variations in Android skins and hardware complicate optimization efforts.
This inconsistency results in increased development costs, extended testing periods, and ultimately a diminished user experience. Issues such as apps being terminated in the background, devices overheating, and performance degradation over time are common.
Google has begun tightening regulations on its end. With Android 17, the system will implement clearer memory limits based on a device’s total RAM and address critical issues like memory leaks. The alliance aims to enhance this with what they term a “fair memory mechanism.”
The initiative comprises three key components
The initiative includes three main elements. First is a unified standard that specifies the amount of memory applications should consume.
Second is a smarter notification system that alerts apps when memory is low, allowing them to free up resources before the system intervenes. Third is a set of contextual rules that determines when and how these notifications should be issued.
Developers have until June 30, 2026, to adapt their applications. The alliance assures that each member company will provide documentation and technical assistance to facilitate this transition.
Established in 2021, the Gold Standard Alliance is a non-profit initiative formed by Lenovo and major Chinese smartphone manufacturers. It also operates a certification program that highlights applications meeting performance, stability, and efficiency standards across participating app stores.
