Iran Optimistic About Indias Continued Development of Chabahar Port: Araqchi

New Delhi, May 16: Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi emphasized the significance of Chabahar Port as a symbol of cooperation between India and Iran. Speaking after a BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting, he expressed confidence that the port, developed by India, would serve as a “golden gateway” to Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Europe.

Araghchi acknowledged that the development of Chabahar Port has slowed due to U.S. sanctions but remains hopeful that India will continue its work on this strategic project. He stated, “Chabahar Port represents the collaboration between India and Iran, and we are pleased that Indians have played a crucial role in its development. Although progress has been hindered by U.S. sanctions, I firmly believe that this port will become a golden gateway for India to Central Asia, the Caucasus, and further into Europe. Additionally, it will provide access to the Indian Ocean for Europe, Central Asia, and other nations.”

He further remarked, “This is a highly strategic port, vital for us, India, and many other countries. Therefore, I hope India will continue its efforts at this port, ensuring it is fully developed to serve the interests of all nations. I believe India can play a significant role in promoting peace, diplomacy, and security in this region, given its friendly relations with nearly all countries in the Persian Gulf, whether to the north or south.”

Last September, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated it was assessing the impact of the U.S. decision to revoke waivers related to the Chabahar Port project, in which India is a partner. The U.S. announced it would withdraw the sanctions exemption granted in 2018 for activities at Iran’s Chabahar Port. According to the U.S. State Department, this move could impose restrictions under the Iran Freedom and Counter-Proliferation Act (IFCA) on parties involved in the port’s operations.

India and Iran have also signed a ten-year agreement for the operation of Chabahar Port, with India committing to provide a $250 million credit facility for the port’s infrastructure development. Furthermore, both nations plan to connect Chabahar Port to Iran’s railway network by constructing a 700-kilometer rail line linking it to the city of Zahedan.
