New Delhi, May 16: Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described his discussions with Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar as meaningful during his visit to India. He emphasized that Iran aims to remain a reliable partner for all friendly nations, ensuring the security of their trade.
Araghchi posted on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “In our meaningful conversation with my host, Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar, we discussed regional developments and clarified that Iran will always fulfill its historical responsibility as a guardian of security in the Hormuz Strait. Iran is a trustworthy partner for all friendly nations, who can rely on it for the safety of their trade.”
He highlighted that Tehran values its relationship with India, sharing common concerns and interests regarding issues in the Persian Gulf.
Regarding the Hormuz Strait, he expressed a desire for it to remain fully open. “It is open on our side, and all ships can pass through. The Hormuz Strait will remain open for commercial vessels, but ships from countries involved in conflict with Iran will not be allowed entry.” His statement comes at a time when this waterway is considered crucial for global oil and trade.
The Iranian Foreign Minister noted that vessels wishing to pass through must contact their military, as there are some mines and obstacles present. “We will provide them with a safe passage, as we have done for many Indian vessels. Ensuring the safe movement of all ships is our policy, and we are ready to assist them.”
He added that Chabahar Port symbolizes the cooperation between India and Iran, expressing satisfaction with the significant role Indians have played in its development. Although progress has slowed due to U.S. sanctions, he is confident that this port will serve as a ‘golden gateway’ for India to Central Asia, the Caucasus, and further into Europe. Additionally, it will provide access to the Indian Ocean for Europe, Central Asia, and other countries.
