Punjab Election Commission Urges Political Parties to Appoint Booth Level Agents

Chandigarh, May 16: In light of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiated by the Election Commission of India, Chief Electoral Officer Anindita Mitra convened a meeting with representatives of registered and recognized political parties on Friday. During the meeting, she urged them to appoint Booth Level Agents (BLAs) to ensure transparency and smooth operations during the revision process.

Mitra emphasized the critical role that BLAs will play in the intensive revision process. She stressed that registered political parties should complete their appointments without delay.

Timely deployment of BLAs will facilitate training for booth-level officials and ensure regular information sharing at every stage of the process to maintain full transparency.

Additionally, she called on political parties to expedite the appointment process for booth-level agents.

Mitra stated that during the SIR process, her office will remain in continuous coordination with political parties.

Information regarding voting rights was also shared with the political parties.

Under the SIR, booth-level officials will assist in filling out voter forms door-to-door from June 25 to July 24.

For this task, the entire electoral machinery has been deployed, including 24,453 booth-level officials, 2,476 supervisors, 117 voter registration officers, and 234 assistant voter registration officers.

She further noted that training for booth-level officials and other preparations related to the SIR process will take place from June 15 to June 24.

The aim of this process is to include every eligible citizen in the voter list and remove ineligible individuals from it.

The Chief Electoral Officer highlighted that holding fake votes is a crime under the Constitution, punishable by up to one year in prison.

Mitra also reported that mapping work has been completed in 89.58% of rural areas and 73% of urban areas in the state.

She mentioned that a similar SIR was conducted in Punjab in 2003, and the current intensive revision is based on that previous revision.
