Kolkata, February 17: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has suspended three micro observers involved in the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal. This decision was announced by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of the state on Tuesday. The suspended observers are accused of negligence in their duties.

According to a statement released by the CEO’s office, the suspension came after reports from district electoral observers appointed by the ECI. The micro observers, who are on deputation for voter list duties, are expected to perform their responsibilities diligently. If they delegate their tasks to others, they will face consequences.

The three suspended micro observers include a manager from the Bengal Rural Development Bank, a senior manager from the public sector UCO Bank, and a central excise inspector. They were appointed as micro observers by the Election Commission for the ongoing SIR in the state.

The Commission has ordered a departmental inquiry into the involvement of these three government officials. The original appointing authority will provide regular updates to the Election Commission regarding the progress of the investigation.

Earlier, on Monday, the Election Commission suspended seven Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) for negligence in duty, all of whom were officials of the West Bengal government. The Commission also directed the state government to initiate departmental action against these seven AEROs.

However, on Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee stated that while these seven AEROs would be relieved of their duties related to the SIR, none would lose their jobs.
