Odisha Chief Minister Reduces Security Convoy Amid Fuel Conservation Campaign

Bhubaneswar, May 13: In response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal to citizens, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi made a significant decision on Wednesday by halving the number of vehicles in his personal security convoy. This move is part of measures taken in light of the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has led to a global fuel crisis.

Recognizing the impact of the crisis, PM Modi recently urged the public to adopt various measures, particularly to reduce the consumption of petrol and other fuels.

According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), Majhi also encouraged citizens to minimize the use of private vehicles and opt for public transportation as part of the fuel conservation campaign.

The CMO emphasized, “Highlighting the importance of the Prime Minister’s appeal, the Chief Minister urged the people of the state to reduce the use of private vehicles and make greater use of public transport. He advised citizens to use vehicles only when necessary and to avoid unnecessary travel.”

Additionally, the Chief Minister called on the public to refrain from purchasing gold and to avoid unnecessary foreign trips.

Notably, following PM Modi’s decision to reduce the size of his convoy, several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, and Maharashtra, have already announced reductions in their convoy sizes.

During a public meeting organized by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on May 10 at Parade Ground in Secunderabad, PM Modi urged citizens to collectively contribute to shielding the Indian economy from the adverse effects of the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

He highlighted various challenges arising from disruptions in the global supply chain, rising fuel prices, and increasing economic uncertainty due to international tensions.

In this context, PM Modi appealed to citizens to save fuel, utilize metro rail and public transport wherever possible, adopt carpooling, and increase the use of electric vehicles.

He also encouraged industries and offices to reinstate ‘work-from-home’ arrangements, online meetings, and virtual conferences—measures that proved effective in reducing fuel consumption and enhancing productivity during the COVID-19 period.

Specifically, the Prime Minister urged citizens to conserve foreign exchange reserves by avoiding unnecessary purchases of imported goods and unnecessary vacations abroad.
