Swiatek Dominates Pegula to Reach Italian Open Semifinals

Rome, May 13: In a stunning display of skill, Iga Swiatek defeated Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-2 at the Italian Open on Wednesday. Swiatek showcased her dominance on clay courts, finishing the match in just 66 minutes and securing her spot in the semifinals.

Swiatek is now set to pursue her fifth title at the French Open, Roland Garros. For Pegula, this loss marks the end of another impressive week in the tournament. Swiatek’s next challenge will come against either Elena Rybakina or Elina Svitolina as she aims for a place in the finals.

This performance is Swiatek’s best of the 2026 season so far. After struggling earlier this year and exiting in the quarterfinals, the former world number one has regained her form at Foro Italico.

The victory holds additional significance for Swiatek, as she had not reached any semifinals in major tournaments like the Australian Open, Doha, Indian Wells, and Stuttgart despite strong starts. However, in Rome, the three-time champion has found her rhythm at a crucial time in the clay-court season.

After dropping a set against Katie McNally at the tournament’s start, Swiatek gradually improved her game, defeating Elizabeth Cocciaretto and Naomi Osaka before overpowering Pegula.

The quarterfinal match was particularly intriguing, given the close head-to-head record between the two players. With Pegula’s consistent performance over the past year and her strong start in the Rome tournament, many anticipated a tough match for the Polish player. Contrary to expectations, Swiatek maintained her dominance from the outset.

Pegula struggled to handle the speed of Swiatek’s shots, while Swiatek kept her serve secure, denying Pegula any break points throughout the match.
