New Delhi, May 13: Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk confirmed on Wednesday that he is traveling to Beijing aboard Air Force One with U.S. President Donald Trump and several prominent American business leaders. Musk will participate in a significant summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The CEO of Tesla announced his trip via a post on the social media platform X, stating, “I am heading to Beijing on Air Force One.” His confirmation indicates that many top corporate leaders from the U.S. are also en route to China. This visit is viewed as a major diplomatic and economic effort between the world’s two largest economies.
The American delegation includes over a dozen prominent business figures, with Musk and Jensen Huang being the most notable. This visit comes at a time when, despite geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties between the U.S. and China, American technology and industrial companies are keen on maintaining their strategic business relationships with China.
This trip to Beijing is particularly significant as it marks the first visit by a sitting U.S. president to China in nearly a decade. It is expected that Trump will focus on enhancing trade cooperation and strengthening economic agreements during this visit, while also considering the increasing political and economic pressures back home.
The summit is also crucial for Nvidia, which is facing challenges in obtaining approval to sell its advanced H200 artificial intelligence (AI) chips in China. Rising export restrictions and stringent monitoring of semiconductor trade are major factors behind these difficulties.
Reports indicate that prior to Trump’s arrival in Beijing, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Basset met with Chinese officials in South Korea. The discussion centered on maintaining stability in the trade agreement established last year between the two countries.
It has also been reported that there were several changes to the business delegation compared to the White House’s initial plan. Names like Elon Musk and Tim Cook were initially included, but the final delegation saw the addition of several other corporate leaders.
Highlighting the importance of the business delegation, Trump praised the participating entrepreneurs in a post on the social media platform Truth Social before departing for Beijing. He stated, “I will tell President Xi Jinping, who is a highly respected leader, to open China further so that these talented individuals can fully utilize their potential.”
