Three Acquitted in Akshardham Attack Case, Jamiyat Ulema-e-Hind Hails Victory

New Delhi: Three individuals arrested in connection with the Akshardham temple attack have been acquitted with honour. Jamiyat Ulema-e-Hind president Arshad Madni described this as a significant legal success for the organisation.

In a post on the social media platform X, Arshad Madni stated, “Justice has been served for the innocent, but it remains incomplete without punishing those who destroyed the lives of the victims. Jamiyat Ulema-e-Hind continues to fight cases against the responsible officials in courts. Two of the three acquitted individuals are residents of Ahmedabad. At the time of the attack, they were working in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, yet they were declared absconders and accused. When they returned to India in 2019, the Crime Branch arrested and jailed them.”

He further expressed concern over the delay in justice, “It is unfortunate that it took six years for these innocent people to get justice, highlighting the weaknesses of our judicial system. The regrettable aspect is that in current circumstances, securing justice for a particular community is extremely difficult if not impossible. During this process, valuable years of innocent people are wasted behind bars with no accountability for this. Consequently, those responsible become more emboldened.”

Madni emphasised, “In our view, justice remains incomplete until accountability is fixed and those who ruined innocent lives are punished. Until then, this unfortunate cycle cannot end. Such misuse of the legal system to harass innocents will continue. To expose and hold accountable the officials responsible for the suffering of innocent Muslims, Jamiyat Ulema-e-Hind filed a petition in the Supreme Court in 2014 on behalf of those acquitted then, seeking compensation and legal action against the guilty officials. Various hearings on this matter have taken place.”

Describing the court proceedings, he said, “The government’s lawyer argued that if the petition succeeded, every acquitted person would claim compensation and action against police, which would demoralise the police force, and thus sought dismissal of the petition. Senior advocate K.T.S. Tulsi, representing Jamiyat Ulema-e-Hind, countered stating that the law provides for compensation and action against guilty officials. Currently, the compensation matter is under consideration in lower courts.”

Madni expressed hope, “This judgment strengthens the hope that, Inshallah, compensation decisions in favour of innocent victims will come soon. Jamiyat Ulema-e-Hind is advocating hundreds of such cases from lower courts to the Supreme Court. We are confident that innocent people will be acquitted with dignity.”
