Chandigarh, May 17: The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally requested the state election commission and Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav to postpone the municipal elections in the Muktsar district. This request follows a complaint citing widespread violence, threats, and interference in the nomination process, as well as alleged biased actions by the police.
In a complaint submitted by BJP office secretary Sunil Dutt Bhardwaj, the party accused both its candidates and those from the opposition of being threatened and attacked. It claimed that anti-social elements supporting the ruling Aam Aadmi Party illegally obstructed the filing of nomination papers.
On May 16, armed supporters allegedly led by Gurpreet Singh Sekhon created chaos around the nomination center in Muktsar, resulting in injuries to several candidates and their supporters.
The BJP also alleged that local police officers remained passive and failed to ensure a fair nomination process. The complaint indicated that an FIR was only registered on May 17 after significant public outcry regarding the violence and disruptions at the nomination center, naming approximately 300 unidentified individuals.
The party has called for the immediate removal and transfer of the relevant officials in Ferozepur, along with a demand for an independent investigation into the entire incident.
Furthermore, the BJP is seeking adequate security for candidates, stringent action against the perpetrators, and opportunities for candidates who were allegedly prevented from submitting their nominations.
The party emphasized that democracy cannot function in an environment of fear, threats, and violence, insisting that the integrity of the electoral process must be safeguarded at all costs.
The BJP has urged the election commission to postpone the elections in Muktsar until favorable conditions for free and fair elections are restored.
