IDF Claims Elimination of Hamas Operations Commander in Gaza Airstrike

Jerusalem, May 17: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday that it has successfully targeted and killed a key operations commander of Hamas, who was allegedly orchestrating plots against the Israeli military.

The IDF stated on the social media platform X, “On Saturday, the Southern Command of the IDF eliminated Bahaa Baroud, the commander of Hamas’s operations headquarters.”

According to the IDF, Baroud was involved in planning and executing multiple schemes against IDF soldiers stationed in the Gaza Strip and Israeli civilians throughout the ongoing conflict, particularly in recent times.

The military emphasized that Baroud posed an immediate threat to IDF personnel, which led to his precise elimination in an airstrike.

The IDF also noted that several measures were taken to prevent civilian casualties during the attack, including the use of precision weapons and aerial surveillance.

Last week, the IDF claimed it had destroyed a weapons manufacturing site and arsenal belonging to Palestinian Islamic Jihad in northern Gaza.

The military reported that this location was being utilized by the organization for weapon production and by Hamas for creating explosives and stockpiling arms intended to harm Israeli civilians and IDF soldiers.

IDF forces under the Southern Command are currently deployed in that region.

Last month, the IDF announced the destruction of 14 kilometers of underground tunnels in northern Gaza.

According to the military, during this operation, brigade forces collaborated with the Yahalom unit to demolish approximately 14 kilometers of tunnels, which contained sleeping quarters and a significant cache of weapons. The campaign to clear the area is ongoing.

The IDF stated that forces from the Northern Brigade and Division 252 have been conducting specific operations for several months to dismantle Hamas’s underground network in northern Gaza.
