Srinagar, May 18: The National Commission for Women (NCW) organized a two-day event titled ‘Shakti Samvad’ in Srinagar on May 16-17, bringing together chairpersons, members, and secretaries of state women’s commissions from over 20 states. The program aimed to enhance institutional coordination, promote capacity building, and encourage dialogue for women’s welfare and empowerment.
The event was inaugurated by NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar. In her opening address, she highlighted that women are making significant contributions in governance, the judiciary, science, media, and public life. However, ensuring their safety, dignity, and equal opportunities remains a collective responsibility. She emphasized that women’s commissions are not just grievance redressal bodies but institutions of trust, support, and justice for women.
The closing session featured Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences, as the chief guest. He stressed the importance of coordinated institutional efforts and policy support to advance women-led development in India. He noted that science and technology are powerful tools for social change, playing a crucial role in improving women’s living standards by enhancing access to education, healthcare, entrepreneurship, and digital opportunities.
The program included sessions on state law reviews from the perspective of women’s rights, recent Supreme Court and High Court rulings related to women, solutions to the issue of stalking—both legal and institutional responses—and discussions on women and the new labor code. Experts and participants deliberated on the evolving legal framework addressing emerging challenges affecting women across the country, workplace dignity, and institutional responses.
The event concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen collaboration between participating state women’s commissions and the NCW, improve institutional mechanisms, and advance the goals of women’s rights, safety, and empowerment nationwide.
