Tej Pratap Yadav Critiques Bihars Liquor Ban Amid Tragic Incident

Patna, April 9: Tej Pratap Yadav, the national president of the Jan Shakti Janata Dal (JJD), has openly criticized the liquor ban policy in Bihar. He claims that despite being in place for nearly a decade, the prohibition has completely failed.

His remarks come in the wake of a recent tragedy in Motihari, where 11 people lost their lives due to toxic alcohol, raising serious questions about the effective implementation of the ban.

Yadav alleged that liquor is being sold openly across the state. He stated, “There has been much talk about the liquor ban, but the reality is that alcohol is available at every corner, every street, and every neighborhood. If people are drinking everywhere, then where is the ban?”

He further asserted that the widespread availability of illegal alcohol has rendered the policy ineffective at the grassroots level.

Targeting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Yadav suggested that the failure of the liquor ban is one reason behind Kumar’s political move to Delhi. “The liquor ban has failed, which is why Nitish Kumar is resigning and going to Delhi,” he said.

Referencing recent incidents of toxic alcohol consumption, Yadav accused the state of illegal production and sale of counterfeit liquor. He mentioned that toxic alcohol is being stored in clay pots and buried underground, with the police unable to detect it. “People are consuming it and dying,” he added.

When questioned about his previous support for the liquor ban, Yadav dismissed it as a thing of the past. “That was a bygone era. The reality today is different; alcohol is easily available everywhere,” he stated.

These comments are likely to intensify the ongoing political debate regarding Bihar’s liquor ban, especially as enforcement challenges and recent tragic events remain in the public eye.

The tragedy began on the evening of April 1 in East Champaran district, with villagers falling ill starting April 2 and being admitted to various hospitals. So far, 11 people have died, and over 15 others are battling for their lives in hospitals. Six victims have permanently lost their eyesight due to this toxic alcohol incident.
