The Hague, May 16: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a five-nation tour, having commenced his journey on Friday. The first leg of his trip took him to the United Arab Emirates. In the second phase, PM Modi is set to engage in bilateral talks with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Saturday. Additionally, he will meet with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima during this official visit.
During his stay, PM Modi is expected to address the Indian community residing in the Netherlands. He is also anticipated to hold discussions with prominent business leaders from the country.
PM Modi will remain in the Netherlands until May 17. This marks his second visit to the Netherlands, with his first trip occurring in 2017. The current visit comes at a pivotal moment for India-Netherlands relations, aiming to strengthen strategic cooperation between the two nations.
The Prime Minister arrived in the Netherlands on Friday evening as part of his diplomatic tour to enhance India’s strategic, economic, and technological partnerships in Europe.
Announcing the visit, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, posted on the social media platform X, “Good day, Netherlands! PM Modi has arrived. This visit will strengthen various partnerships between India and the Netherlands and provide an opportunity to connect with the largest Indian community in Europe.”
In a special briefing prior to the visit, Secretary (West) Sibi George from the Ministry of External Affairs noted, “In recent years, our partnership has deepened significantly in traditional areas of trade and investment, as well as essential sectors like water, agriculture, and health. Cooperation has also expanded in strategic areas such as technology, innovation, defense, security, semiconductors, renewable energy, education, and maritime sectors.”
People-to-people connections remain a crucial aspect of India-Netherlands relations. Over 90,000 non-resident Indians and individuals of Indian origin reside in the Netherlands, along with more than 200,000 members of the Surinamese Hindustani community. Additionally, around 3,500 Indian students are pursuing higher education across various universities in the country.
A significant agenda is set for PM Modi’s visit, with expectations that it will bolster new strategic aspects of the partnership forged through ongoing efforts between the two countries.
