Heavy Rain Alert in Tamil Nadu Due to Deep Depression in Bay of Bengal

Chennai, May 16: The effects of a deep depression forming in the Bay of Bengal are becoming increasingly evident in Tamil Nadu. Heavy rainfall is occurring in several districts due to this weather system in the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjacent west-central region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for heavy rain in the coming days.

According to the weather department, heavy rainfall is expected on Saturday in the districts of Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Theni. On Sunday, areas such as Dindigul, Theni, Coimbatore, and Nilgiri may experience intense rainfall.

The IMD has also forecasted cloudy skies and moderate rain in Chennai over the next two days. Additionally, the department indicated that the southwest monsoon could arrive in parts of the Andaman Sea, southern Bay of Bengal, and Andaman-Nicobar Islands within the next 24 hours. This year’s monsoon is anticipated to arrive approximately five days earlier than the usual date of May 20.

On Friday, several districts in the state recorded heavy rainfall. While the rain provided relief from the intense heat, some incidents were reported.

In Nagapattinam district, areas like Velipalayam, Puthur, Velankanni, Tirupundi, and Kilvelur experienced heavy rain for about 20 minutes. During the downpour at Silver Beach in Cuddalore district, three young men taking selfies were struck by lightning. One of them, Hariharan from Puthupalayam, lost his life, while two others were hospitalized.

Heavy rain accompanied by lightning was also reported in the Madurantakam, Melmaruvathur, and Cheyyur regions of Chengalpattu district. In the Sithamur area, a coconut tree fell on a house during a strong storm, resulting in the death of a woman named Kanniyammal.

Conversely, continuous rainfall in Theni, Coimbatore, Perambalur, and Tenkasi has made the weather pleasant. Farmers welcomed the rain, expressing hope that it would significantly benefit agriculture in the coming days.
