IMD Issues Rain and Storm Alerts for 15 States in India

New Delhi, May 16: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy rainfall and storms across 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Punjab. Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution during this period.

The IMD warned of significant weather changes on May 16, with winds expected to reach speeds of 80 to 85 kilometers per hour in several areas. Northern states may experience severe storms again, and hailstorm warnings have also been issued for various regions.

In Punjab, alerts for storms and rainfall have been issued for six districts. According to the weather center in Chandigarh, Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Fazilka, Amritsar, Hoshiarpur, and Muktsar may face severe storms accompanied by lightning. Winds in these districts could reach speeds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour.

Additionally, the IMD has issued a ‘Yellow Alert’ for heatwave conditions in several parts of Punjab from May 16 to May 20.

Residents of Delhi enjoyed a pleasant morning on Friday, with a minimum temperature recorded at around 25 degrees Celsius. This followed a day of strong dust storms and high winds in the national capital and parts of northern India. However, the IMD forecasts a rapid increase in temperatures in Delhi-NCR over the next few days, with maximum temperatures expected to exceed 40 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Previously, the IMD had predicted thunderstorms and light rain during the night. Despite a brief respite from the heat, the latest forecasts indicate a return of hot and dry weather in the region.

On May 16, clear skies are expected in Delhi, with maximum temperatures reaching 41 degrees Celsius and minimum temperatures around 24 degrees Celsius.

Temperatures may rise further to 42 degrees Celsius on May 17, with partially cloudy skies and the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning.
