Kolkata Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas Dismissed Following ED Action

Kolkata, May 16: The West Bengal government has terminated the services of Kolkata Police Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas following actions taken by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Biswas was recently arrested by the ED.

Shantanu Sinha Biswas was among the officials who received a two-year service extension from the previous Mamata Banerjee government. However, following a change in power in West Bengal, actions against him have intensified. The new BJP government has revoked his service extension.

According to an insider from the state secretariat ‘Nabanna’, unlike other officials who received extensions, Biswas was not given the opportunity to resign. Instead, the state government directly terminated his service extension.

Recently, the ED took action related to money laundering and land-related syndicate cases, which involve a notorious and currently absconding history-sheeter, Biswajit Poddar, also known as ‘Sona Pappu’.

Before his arrest on Thursday night, ED officials interrogated Shantanu for nearly ten hours. Previously, after multiple notices from the ED, Biswas had gone into hiding, prompting the agency to issue a ‘lookout notice’ against him.

Meanwhile, sources familiar with the situation reported that 12 other Kolkata police officers, who were close associates of Biswas during his tenure, are now under investigation by the ED. They are accused of involvement in the same money laundering and land syndicate case that led to the arrest of the former deputy commissioner of the city police.

It is alleged that Sona Pappu, arrested real estate businessman Joy Kamdar, and several police personnel led by Biswas were part of a network that seized disputed lands and properties in Kolkata and surrounding areas at very low prices. These properties were later used in lucrative real estate ventures.

The gang reportedly pressured genuine landowners by filing false FIRs against them in various police stations, forcing them to sell their land or property to the syndicate at significantly reduced prices.

According to reports, the 12 other police officers now under ED scrutiny mostly hold ranks of inspector and sub-inspector.
