Chennai, May 21: Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s administration in Tamil Nadu has executed its first significant cabinet expansion, incorporating 23 new ministers. This move aims to strengthen governance, fill key vacancies, and accommodate coalition partners, including members from the Congress party.
Following the assembly elections, Vijay’s party, the Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the largest party, securing 108 seats. The party subsequently garnered support from several coalition allies and independent legislators to surpass the majority threshold and form the government.
On May 10, Vijay took the oath of office alongside nine ministers: N. Anand, Aadhav Arjun, Dr. K.G. Arunraj, K.A. Sengottaiyan, P. Venkataramanan, R. Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, Dr. T.K. Prabhu, and S. Keertana.
The allocation of departments for the initial cabinet was finalized on May 16. However, several crucial departments, including Forests, Agriculture, Revenue, Housing, Cooperation, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), remained without dedicated ministers, leading to widespread speculation about a prompt cabinet expansion.
The state government has officially announced the inclusion of 23 legislators and leaders in the cabinet, marking a significant expansion for Vijay’s administration.
Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar administered the oath of office to the newly appointed ministers during the ceremony.
This expansion also marks the return of the Congress party to the Tamil Nadu cabinet after several decades, with two Congress legislators taking ministerial oaths.
Leaders from supporting coalition parties, including VCK President Thol. Thirumavalavan and other coalition leaders, attended the swearing-in ceremony.
The newly elected ministers include Srinath (Thoothukudi), Kamali S (Avinashi), C. Vijayalakshmi (Kumarapalayam), R.V. Ranjitkumar (Kanchipuram), Vinod (Kumbakonam), Rajiv (Tiruvadanai), B. Rajkumar (Kuddalore), V. Gandhiraj (Arakkonam), Mathan Raja P (Ottapidaram), Jagadeshwari K (Rajapalayam), M. Vijay Balaji (Erode East), Logesh Tamilselvan D (Rasipuram), Vijay Tamilan Parthiban A (Salem South), Ramesh (Srirangam), Kumar R (Velachery), Thenarasu K (Sriperumbudur), V. Sampath Kumar (Coimbatore North), Mohammad Farwas J (Aranthangi), D. Sarathkumar (Tambaram), N. Mary Wilson (Dr. Radhakrishnan Nagar), and Vignesh K (Kinathukadavu).
Additionally, Congress legislators Rajesh Kumar S (Kiliyur) and K.P. Vishwanathan (Melur) have also taken oaths as ministers.
The cabinet expansion is expected to enhance regional representation and strengthen the administrative functioning of the newly formed government.
