World Central Kitchen Faces Funding Crisis, Reduces Food Operations in Gaza

New Delhi, May 21: The international aid organization World Central Kitchen (WCK) is grappling with a funding crisis. The situation has escalated to a point where it has decided to reduce its food operations in Gaza in the coming months. The organization emphasized that the responsibility of providing food to the people of Gaza cannot rest solely on one entity.

WCK’s official website confirmed this decision. In a detailed statement, it outlined its challenges and those faced by Gaza. The organization stated it will limit food distribution in Gaza to “pre-ceasefire feeding levels.” This decision is driven solely by financial pressures, not a decrease in need.

According to WCK, since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in 2023, it has spent over $500 million to provide food to the people of Gaza. The Israeli blockade has negatively impacted the food supply chain in the region. During this period, the organization expanded its operations to deliver 1 million hot meals daily.

WCK noted that sustaining such a large-scale relief effort is beyond the capacity of any single volunteer organization. The organization has also called on the international community to increase humanitarian assistance in Gaza.

WCK argues that ongoing conflicts in Iran and the broader region have affected access routes to Gaza. Nevertheless, the organization is currently receiving enough trucks to continue its relief services.

WCK founder José Andrés stated, “We need more trucks and food every day to keep delivering meals to hungry families. Continuous supply of food and fuel is essential. This is Gaza’s lifeline, and it must remain open at all costs.”

WCK stresses that uninterrupted humanitarian assistance in Gaza is crucial. Regular and reliable access can save lives.

However, the organization clarified that access alone is not sufficient. While WCK specializes in emergency food relief, ensuring long-term food security cannot be the responsibility of a single entity.

The organization pointed out that people in Gaza have lost both their homes and livelihoods. Therefore, governments, international organizations, and partner countries must step up to provide sustainable and secure economic assistance. WCK stated that the world should not only discuss the plight of Palestinians but also provide tangible support.

While the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has somewhat eased, Palestinians still face shortages of essential items like food and medical supplies.
