PM Modi Expands One Tree for Mother Initiative in Ethiopia and Mauritius

New Delhi, May 21: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned home after a five-day foreign tour, with Italy being the final destination. The visit showcased a blend of diplomatic engagements and light-hearted camaraderie. PM Modi highlighted the similarities between Varanasi and Rome, culminating in a significant moment where he and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni planted a tree together. This act is part of the ‘One Tree for Mother’ campaign, which began on World Environment Day (June 5, 2024), where the Prime Minister has planted trees in several countries.

MyGov has shared clips of the trees planted under PM Modi’s initiative across the globe. In 2025, he contributed to environmental efforts in Ethiopia, Maldives, the UK, Trinidad and Tobago, and Mauritius. He was also seen planting a tree in memory of Mongolian President Khurelsukh Ukhna’s mother at the Hyderabad House in New Delhi. Last year, he planted trees in Guyana as part of this campaign.

Recently, during his meeting with his Italian counterpart Meloni in Rome, PM Modi furthered this initiative by planting a black mulberry tree together. The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, posted on X that PM Modi and PM Meloni planted the tree, known as ‘Krishna Tut’ in India, which connects India and Italy through its culinary, medicinal, and cultural significance. This planting is another step in the ‘One Tree for Mother’ initiative, promoting environmental awareness and sustainable living.

The act of planting trees carries a deeper message. It symbolizes sustainability, cultural connection, and a green future. PM Modi emphasized this cultural bond during a joint press conference in Italy. He remarked that both Rome and Varanasi are ancient cities, with Rome known as the ‘Eternal City.’ His constituency, Varanasi, shares this name. When two civilizations meet, discussions extend beyond agendas, revealing the depth of history, glimpses of the future, and the simplicity of friendship.
