Guwahati, May 21: The Assam Assembly session commenced on Thursday following the formation of the new government. On the first day, elected legislators took their oaths. The temporary speaker of the Assam Assembly, Chandramohan Patwari, administered the oath to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as a member of the 16th Assembly. During this session, BJP leaders reiterated their commitment to implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). In contrast, Congress leaders highlighted inflation as the primary concern.
In discussions within the assembly premises, BJP legislator Diganta Kalita remarked that it was the first day of the assembly. “We all took our oaths. Under CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s leadership, we have pledged to address the people’s issues,” he stated.
Kalita also mentioned, “We have no problem with performing prayers five times, but praying over the microphone causes inconvenience to others. We will take action on this matter in due time.”
BJP legislator Diplu Ranjan Sarma expressed that since the party’s inception, they have been dedicated to serving the people. “The UCC will be implemented in the state,” he asserted.
He acknowledged concerns over rising diesel and petrol prices, stating, “We are worried about the increasing costs. We are working with the Prime Minister to find solutions. It is essential to inform everyone why inflation is rising.”
Newly elected BJP legislator Rupali Langthasa shared her experience, saying, “As a first-time legislator, I feel a unique sense of responsibility. I will fulfill any duties assigned to me and work for my constituents.”
In a media interaction, Congress MP Rakibul Hussain clarified the party’s stance on the UCC. “We oppose the government’s intentions regarding the UCC. We have not received any information about it. As far as Congress is concerned, our president and state president have made their position clear.”
He emphasized that inflation remains the most significant issue. “The rising prices of petrol and diesel are causing everything to become expensive. There are no customers in the market, and shopkeepers are sitting idle. Inflation is our primary concern.”
