Pune, May 21: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has achieved a significant breakthrough in combating wildlife smuggling in Pune. The Mumbai zonal unit and the Pune regional team seized restricted wildlife hidden near Pune railway station and arrested two individuals in connection with the case.
DRI officials received a tip-off about individuals attempting to illegally possess and sell restricted wildlife in Pune. On May 20, authorities intercepted a suspicious person based on surveillance. During the investigation, three live Malabar giant squirrels were discovered concealed in two corrugated cardboard boxes.
Following this, the DRI team conducted further inquiries and apprehended a second suspect at another location in Pune. This individual was found in possession of seven live Indian star tortoises.
Both the Malabar giant squirrel and the Indian star tortoise are listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. These species enjoy the highest level of protection in the country. Hunting, possession, transportation, or trade of these animals is strictly prohibited. Any activity involving them without proper authorization is considered a serious offense.
The DRI has arrested both suspects and handed over all rescued wildlife and the packaging materials used for concealment to the Pune Forest Department for further legal action.
The DRI stated that it will continue to conduct intelligence-based operations against unscrupulous elements and wildlife poaching gangs. Protecting the environment and rare wildlife remains a top priority for the DRI.
This operation underscores a stringent stance against wildlife smuggling in Pune and surrounding areas. In collaboration with the local forest department, the DRI is consistently monitoring such illegal activities. Officials have indicated that campaigns for wildlife protection and environmental conservation will continue in the future.
