Pune Acid Attack Suspect Arrested in Just 24 Hours

Pune, May 21: A shocking incident occurred in the Tadiwala Road area of Pune, where a young woman was the victim of an acid attack stemming from a dispute over a romantic relationship. The attack left her severely injured. Following the incident, the suspect fled the scene, but the Pune Crime Branch acted swiftly, apprehending him within 24 hours in Hubli, Karnataka.

The incident took place around 1:30 AM on May 20, 2026. The attacker suddenly threw acid on the woman, causing severe burns. Bystanders quickly rushed her to the hospital, sparking panic in the area.

Given the gravity of the situation, a case was registered at the Bundgarden police station under several sections of the Indian Penal Code. Senior officials from Pune Police assigned the investigation to the Crime Branch’s Anti-Extortion Squad-2 and Unit-6.

As the investigation commenced, police reviewed over 50 CCTV footage from the vicinity. One suspicious young man was seen fleeing towards Pune Station after the attack. Investigators later discovered that the suspect had escaped on the Chalukya Express train.

According to police, the suspect attempted to evade capture cleverly. He changed his clothes three times during his journey and frequently altered his location. However, through technical analysis and intelligence, the police tracked his whereabouts.

Subsequently, the Pune Crime Branch team, with assistance from the Railway Protection Force (RPF), set up a trap near Golak Road in Hubli and successfully arrested the suspect.

The arrested individual has been identified as Shriram Vadhu Sawner, 30, from the Tarana Wada area of Amla Tehsil in Betul district, Madhya Pradesh. During police interrogation, he confessed that the acid attack was a result of a dispute over a romantic relationship.

This operation was conducted under the guidance of police officials Amitesh Kumar, Sanjay Patil, Tejaswini Satpute, Gauhar Hasan, and Rajendra Mulik. The police are now continuing their investigation into the case.
