Hyderabad, May 21: Telangana Chief Minister Revant Reddy has urged the central government to convene a special session of Parliament to discuss the 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies.
On Thursday, CM Reddy paid tribute to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his death anniversary, stating that the India Mahagathbandhan is ready to support the Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.
He criticized the Modi government for creating obstacles in the implementation of women’s reservation by linking it to the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies. Reddy emphasized that the Women’s Reservation Bill should not be politicized.
The Chief Minister asserted that the reservation for women in legislative bodies should be implemented in the spirit of Rajiv Gandhi, who initiated quotas for women in local bodies to empower them politically.
Describing Rajiv Gandhi as a great leader who sacrificed his life for the nation, he recalled the former Prime Minister’s remarkable contributions. Reddy noted that Gandhi was a visionary who introduced information technology to the country, giving it global recognition.
“Rajiv Gandhi was the one who ushered in the era of technology in India and set the country on the path of development through liberalization policies,” he stated.
CM Reddy claimed that the ‘people’s government’ in Telangana is following Rajiv Gandhi’s ideals for women’s empowerment. He also mentioned the sacrifices made by the Gandhi family for the nation.
He recalled Sonia Gandhi’s courageous decision to fulfill the dream of a separate Telangana state. Reddy highlighted the deep bond between the Gandhi family and the people of Telangana, stating that this relationship transcends familial ties. He assured that as long as Telangana exists, its people will remember and honor the Gandhi family.
The Chief Minister paid floral tributes at the statue of Rajiv Gandhi located near the state secretariat, an event attended by state ministers and senior Congress leaders.
