India-Africa Forum Summit Postponed Amid Ebola Outbreak

New Delhi, May 21: The Ebola virus outbreak is rapidly spreading, prompting governments worldwide to enter alert mode. Increased screening and monitoring of passengers at airports have been implemented. In light of the outbreak, the Indian government and the African Union have decided to postpone the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit (IAFS IV) for the time being.

Originally scheduled to take place from May 28 to May 31 in New Delhi, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that both parties shared their views on the changing health situation in parts of Africa. They reiterated the importance of continuous cooperation to strengthen public health preparedness and response capacity across the continent, including support for the Africa CDC and relevant national institutions.

The Ministry emphasized India’s solidarity with the people and governments of Africa and expressed readiness to contribute to the efforts led by the Africa CDC. This initiative aims to address the evolving health situation, aligning with the shared commitment to a response led by Africa.

Recognizing the importance of full participation and engagement from African leaders and stakeholders, discussions took place between the Indian government, the Chairperson of the African Union, and the African Union Commission regarding the summit and associated activities.

Following these discussions, both parties agreed that it would be prudent to convene the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit at a later date. New dates for the summit and related meetings will be determined through mutual consultation and announced in due course.

India and Africa reaffirmed their longstanding partnership based on unity, mutual respect, South-South cooperation, and a shared commitment to peace, development, prosperity, and the well-being of their people.
