Islamabad, May 21: Two separate coal mining accidents in the Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, have resulted in the deaths of two miners, with another worker injured.
According to local media outlet The Express Tribune, the first incident occurred at the Akorwal coal mine, specifically in Mine Number 5, where two workers were trapped due to a collapse. After a rescue operation lasting approximately two and a half hours, they were retrieved, but one had already succumbed to injuries, while the other sustained injuries. Both the deceased and the injured were reported to be residents of Shangla district.
The second incident took place in a coal mine in the Chaprimasti area, where another worker lost his life. His body was taken back to his village, where family members performed the last rites.
Local residents and labor organizations have expressed serious concerns regarding the lack of safety measures in Pakistan’s mines. They are urging the government to address this issue immediately and enforce strict safety regulations across all mining operations. They argue that such accidents occur frequently, putting the lives of workers at constant risk.
Last month, five miners were killed, and one was injured in mining accidents in the Bolan and Duki regions of Balochistan province. According to Daily Dawn, investigations later revealed that elevated levels of methane gas in the Bolan mine led to the suffocation of three workers, while some managed to escape and inform the authorities.
Reports indicate that many accidents in mines are caused by the accumulation of methane gas and a lack of oxygen. Additionally, there have been incidents involving collisions with mining trolleys.
The ongoing series of accidents has raised serious questions about the safety of workers in mining areas.
