Mumbai, February 28, 2026 (Daily Kiran): India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki, has outlined its initial production strategy for the electric vehicle (EV) segment, stating that around 2,000 electric cars will be produced per month by July. The company recently entered the EV space with its first electric SUV, Maruti Suzuki e Vitara.

Despite the controlled production plan, demand appears strong. During a press conference in Delhi, senior company official Partho Banerjee said the company is receiving around 2,000 to 2,500 enquiries daily. In view of this response, preparations are underway to increase production in the coming months.
Production and Capacity Plans
The e Vitara is currently being manufactured at the company’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat. The same production line is also used for other popular models such as the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, along with export operations. Due to shared capacity, the company is proceeding cautiously to avoid long waiting periods for customers.
From the next financial year beginning April, Maruti Suzuki plans to start a new production line at the same plant. This new facility will have an annual capacity of 2.5 lakh units.
Pricing and Battery Model
The introductory ex-showroom price of the e Vitara starts at ₹15.99 lakh. The company has also introduced a ‘Battery-as-a-Service’ (BaaS) model. Under this option, the car’s price comes down to ₹10.99 lakh, while the battery cost will be paid separately at approximately ₹3.99 per kilometre as EMI.
In the EV market, Maruti’s offering competes with models such as the Tata Curvv EV, MG Windsor EV and Mahindra BE 6.
Focus on Smaller Cities
The company is expanding its reach beyond major metro cities. It has opened 200 premium outlets under the ‘Nexa Studio’ format in smaller towns and aims to increase this number to 600–700 over the next five years.
According to company data, around 10 percent of the country’s total EV sales are now coming from emerging smaller markets. Maruti Suzuki believes that with reliable service support and charging infrastructure, adoption of electric vehicles in smaller cities will grow steadily. The company has set a target of installing one lakh EV chargers across the country by 2030.
