IMD Warns of Storms and Heatwaves Across Several States

New Delhi, May 17: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for severe weather conditions in various parts of the country over the coming days. Heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, gusty winds, and extreme heat are expected from northeastern India to southern and eastern states.

In northwestern India, Jammu and Kashmir may experience light to moderate rainfall along with strong winds on May 19 and 20. Maharashtra and Marathwada are also likely to see thunderstorms accompanied by rain.

The IMD has indicated that heatwave conditions will persist in western Rajasthan from May 17 to 22, with severe heat expected in some areas on May 21 and 22. Uttar Pradesh is also on alert for heatwaves from May 17 to 22, with warnings for severe heat issued for several regions between May 19 and 22. States including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh may also face extreme temperatures.

In northeastern India, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura are forecasted to experience strong winds of 40 to 50 kilometers per hour, along with thunderstorms and rain on May 17. Arunachal Pradesh could see heavy rainfall on May 17 and again from May 20 to 22. Assam and Meghalaya are under alert for heavy rain on May 17-18 and May 21-22.

In southern India, widespread rainfall, lightning, and strong winds are expected in Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep from May 17 to 20. Heavy rain is also anticipated in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and southern interior Karnataka from May 17 to 19. In Rayalaseema, strong winds reaching up to 70 kilometers per hour are predicted on May 19 and 20.

Eastern India, including the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and parts of West Bengal, is likely to experience thunderstorms and rain. An alert for very heavy rainfall and strong winds has been issued for the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on May 17 and 18. Jharkhand may face strong winds on May 19 and 20.

In the past 24 hours, significant rainfall has been recorded in Assam-Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Dibrugarh in Assam recorded 7 centimeters of rain, while Cherrapunji saw 6 centimeters. Raipur in Chhattisgarh also reported 6 centimeters of rainfall.

Warnings have been issued for rough sea conditions, with strong winds of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour expected in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. Fishermen are advised to exercise caution before venturing out to sea.
