Beirut, May 17: Lebanon’s Economy Minister, Amer Bassat, has revealed the severe economic damage inflicted on the country due to Israeli attacks. He estimates that Lebanon has suffered a staggering loss of $2 billion since March 2.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Bassat highlighted the extensive impact of these attacks. “The consequences have been significant. We are facing numerous challenges. People are losing their jobs, agricultural production has halted, construction companies are shutting down, and tourists are not arriving,” he stated.
He further explained that the estimated damage from the attacks amounts to nearly $2 billion, which represents about 7% of Lebanon’s GDP. According to Bassat, the ongoing conflict has severely affected the economy, employment, agriculture, industry, and tourism sectors. Israel continues to assert that its military actions are in response to attacks from Hezbollah.
On Sunday, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported that an Israeli attack in southern Lebanon resulted in the deaths of a husband and wife. Reports indicate that Israeli fighter jets targeted the Al-Saha area in the town of Haboush.
The attack destroyed a home, claiming the lives of a young man named Muhammad Hassan Jamoul and his wife, Sakina Muhammad Abbas Makki.
Meanwhile, the Israeli Defense Forces claimed that after sirens sounded in the Misgav Am area of northern Israel, a “suspicious aerial target” was identified. This aircraft reportedly fell near Israeli troops stationed in southern Lebanon, with no casualties reported.
The Israeli military stated on the social media platform X, “Throughout the night, Hezbollah launched rockets and explosive drones at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, but there were no casualties.”
