New Delhi, May 17: A new trend has emerged among young players during IPL 2026. After impressive performances or taking wickets, players are celebrating by pulling out pieces of paper from their pockets in a unique manner. Lucknow Super Giants’ fast bowler Akash Singh showcased this trend by celebrating three wickets in his debut match with a paper slip. However, this form of celebration has raised eyebrows among former cricketers.
Former Indian cricketer Ambati Rayudu expressed his displeasure about Akash’s ‘paper celebration’ in an interview with ESPN Cricinfo. He questioned whether Akash thought he looked “cool” celebrating this way on television. Rayudu called for a complete ban on such celebrations, insisting that players should not be allowed to bring out paper slips. The slip Akash revealed read, “Akki on fire. Akash knows how to take wickets in T20 cricket.”
When asked about his celebration after the match, Akash stated that it motivates him to perform better. He mentioned that this act inspires him during games and that he intends to continue doing it. South African former bowler Dale Steyn also criticized Akash’s ‘paper celebration,’ arguing that such displays should be prohibited. He emphasized that these actions were never in vogue and should not be encouraged. Ravichandran Ashwin also expressed his discontent regarding the celebration.
Akash is not the only player to engage in ‘paper celebrations’ this season. Prior to him, Chennai Super Kings’ batsman Urvil Patel and Mumbai Indians’ spinner Raghu Sharma were also seen celebrating in a similar fashion. This raises a significant question: should young players avoid controversial statements or celebrations early in their careers, especially when Akash and Raghu adopted this method in their debut matches, while Urvil is still trying to establish himself in the league?
Undoubtedly, the IPL offers a fantastic platform for young talents to shine on a global stage, where not everyone gets a chance to prove their capabilities. Every player has the right to express their joy on the field, but gaining attention for controversies rather than sporting skills can negatively impact their future.
In cricket, performance speaks volumes about one’s ability. Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, often referred to as the ‘God of Cricket,’ was rarely seen celebrating aggressively. Similarly, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Brian Lara, Rahul Dravid, Kane Williamson, VVS Laxman, Kumar Sangakkara, Jacques Kallis, Joe Root, and Mahela Jayawardene have all maintained a dignified approach to celebration. These great players exemplify that performance on the field garners more discussion than the manner of celebration, a lesson that young players need to understand.
