European Nations Protest Israels Participation in Eurovision 2026 Amid Ongoing Conflict

Tel Aviv, May 17: The ongoing conflict involving Hamas in Palestine has now reached the entertainment arena, as European nations have voiced their opposition to Israel’s participation in the Eurovision Song Contest 2026 held in Vienna.

Despite the controversy, Israeli contestant Noam Beaton secured second place in the competition. Following this achievement, Israel’s Defense Minister, Yoav Galant, extended his congratulations to Beaton while also criticizing Spain and other European countries for their stance.

In a post on the social media platform X, written in both Hebrew and Spanish, Galant praised Beaton on behalf of the Israeli military and its soldiers. He described Beaton’s success as a powerful response to the inflammatory and defamatory campaigns led by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his international allies.

Galant stated, “On behalf of the defense establishments and IDF soldiers, I congratulate Noam Beaton for achieving a remarkable success by securing second place in Eurovision despite the provocative and slanderous campaign by Pedro Sánchez and his associates. You acted like a hero, bringing honor and pride to Israel and joy to the IDF soldiers who fight for our security, as well as to all Israeli citizens. The people of Israel are alive!”

Following the results, Israeli President Isaac Herzog congratulated Beaton on his success and commended his performance, highlighting Israel’s positive representation on the international stage. Herzog remarked, “You have greatly impressed us. You are simply amazing. Your performance was flawless, and you brought honor to the people of Israel. Your calm and composure on stage were truly remarkable. Keep growing stronger.”

Bulgaria emerged as the winner of the competition.

Spain is one of the “Big Five” financial contributors to Eurovision. Along with Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and Iceland, Spain participated in a broadcast boycott against Israeli contestants. Their national public broadcasters refused to air the show or send contestants, protesting the decision by the European Broadcasting Union to allow Israel to compete following the devastating conflict in Gaza.

Amid audience boycotts and protests during the live semi-finals and finals, Beaton’s song resonated with the audience, earning him second place, while Michelle from Bulgaria claimed the top spot.

It is important to note that many countries have protested against Israel’s actions in Palestine, leading to ongoing opposition on international platforms. This backdrop is the reason for the protests against Israel’s participation in Eurovision 2026.
