Bihars Malmas Mela Kicks Off with Traditional Ceremonies

Rajgir, May 17: The historic and mythological town of Rajgir in Bihar’s Nalanda district has officially launched the world-renowned Malmas Mela. Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary inaugurated the festival on Sunday amidst the chanting of Vedic mantras, the sound of conch shells, and a traditional flag hoisting ceremony at the Brahmakund complex.

Following the inauguration, CM Choudhary inspected the Brahmakund and the fair area to assess the arrangements. The opening ceremony was attended by several ministers, public representatives, and administrative officials. This religious fair will continue for nearly a month, concluding on June 15.

According to the Hindu calendar, the 13th month that occurs every third year is referred to as Malmas. It is believed that during this month, all 33 crore deities from heaven leave their realms to reside in Rajgir. This is why auspicious activities are prohibited in other parts of the country during this time. However, on the sacred land of Rajgir, performing rituals, donating, and bathing is said to yield infinite rewards.

During the Malmas month, millions of devotees and pilgrims bathe in various kunds, meditate, and perform worship at temples. The Indian calendar considers this month, also known as Adhimas, to be extremely sacred. A large number of saints, pilgrims, and devotees stay in Rajgir throughout the month, participating in rituals at the 22 kunds and 52 streams located there.

Religious beliefs state that bathing in these kunds washes away sins and alleviates suffering, leading to spiritual purification. During the fair, significant bathing events are scheduled: Panchami Snan on May 21, the First Royal Bath on May 27, the Second Royal Bath on May 31, another Panchami Snan on June 5, the Third Royal Bath on June 11, and the Amavasya Snan and immersion on June 15, 2026.

The tourism department and Nalanda district administration have made special arrangements for the pilgrims. Modern facilities have been implemented for their convenience. Waterproof pandals constructed using German hanger technology have been set up at 11 locations, while large passenger sheds have been built at three sites.
