Madhya Pradesh Government to Revamp Fire Safety Regulations After Tragic Hotel Fire

Bhopal, June 5: Following a devastating fire at a hotel in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, which claimed the lives of 21 individuals, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to enhance its fire safety measures.

The state government plans to tighten fire safety regulations and align proposed laws with the central government’s ‘Model Act.’ Additionally, a new law is being prepared to regulate new colonies.

A significant meeting was held on Thursday, chaired by Urban Development and Housing Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya. The meeting extensively reviewed the Madhya Pradesh Fire Fighting and Emergency Services Bill-2026 and the Madhya Pradesh Colony Act-2026 draft. The minister instructed officials to incorporate suggestions from the meeting and present a revised draft of both bills next week.

Vijayvargiya emphasized that the fire bill should conform to the central government’s model act to ensure uniform fire safety standards across the country, enabling effective responses to emergencies.

He noted that Madhya Pradesh is set to witness rapid development of large buildings, industrial projects, and modern infrastructure in the coming years. Therefore, it is essential for the state to be equipped with advanced tools, modern technology, and trained personnel to respond promptly and effectively in case of any accidents.

The meeting also discussed setting standards for the educational qualifications and experience of fire safety officials and other technical staff. The minister directed a study of regulations from other states to inform the new framework. He insisted that all buildings must clearly display emergency exit routes and pipeline layouts.

To further strengthen fire services, the proposal for a ‘fire tax’ was also considered. The minister requested detailed information on fire stations, firefighting vehicles, and personnel available in the state’s municipal corporations, municipalities, and town councils. He stated that special training programs should be organized for staff, considering future needs.

The draft of the Madhya Pradesh Colony Act-2026 was also discussed during the meeting. Issues such as registration of colonies, development permissions, penalties for rule violations, and actions against illegal and unauthorized colonies were considered. Vijayvargiya issued clear instructions for strict adherence to regulations.
