Prime Minister Modi Expresses Condolences on the Passing of Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap

New Delhi, June 5: Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap, a renowned constitutional expert and former Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha, passed away on Thursday at his residence in Delhi after a prolonged illness. He was 97 years old.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow on the social media platform ‘X’, stating that he felt deep sadness over Dr. Kashyap’s demise. He noted that Dr. Kashyap was one of India’s leading constitutional scholars, whose contributions to parliamentary and constitutional discourse enriched society. The Prime Minister also highlighted Dr. Kashyap’s writings and his commitment to strengthening democratic institutions, extending his condolences to the grieving family and friends with a heartfelt “Om Shanti.”

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed profound sorrow at his passing. She remarked that the news of Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap’s death is very sad. He enriched the study of our Constitution and the development of our parliamentary system with his wisdom and insights. She conveyed her deep condolences to his family and admirers.

Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan issued a message of condolence as well, stating that Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap was a distinguished constitutional expert and scholar. Through his books, research, and public service, he made invaluable contributions to the understanding of the Indian Constitution and parliamentary democracy. His clear thinking, intellectual capacity, and dedication to democratic institutions inspired many generations.

Dr. Subhash C. Kashyap served as the Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha from 1983 to 1990. He dedicated nearly 37 years of his life to the Parliament, from the first Lok Sabha under Jawaharlal Nehru to the ninth Lok Sabha. He authored over 100 books and was regarded as one of the most reliable experts on the Indian Constitution and parliamentary procedures.

Born in 1929 in Chandpur, Bijnor district, Uttar Pradesh, to a family of freedom fighters, Dr. Kashyap received higher education and professional training in Allahabad, New Delhi, Washington D.C., London, and Geneva. He began his career as a journalist and assistant professor at Allahabad University. After training in advocacy at the Allahabad High Court, he entered public service in Parliament.
