Major Drug Bust in Mizoram: Eight Women Arrested

Aizawl, June 5: Mizoram police have conducted a significant operation against drug trafficking, leading to the arrest of eight women in Champai district during six separate raids on the same day. Authorities seized heroin valued at over ₹7 million from the suspects.

According to police officials, during a routine inspection at the Khankawn check gate and the India-Myanmar Friendship Bridge in the Champai district, 352 grams of heroin were discovered hidden in 29 soap boxes.

The arrested women have been identified as Lalhriyatjuali (23), Hamaingaihjuwali (37), Liannehmavi (21), Wesley Thangmavi (19), Lalengmavi (50), Lalcrosshalumavi (24), Lalramchungi (36), and Lalthakimi (53).

Mizoram police reported that these seizures were part of ongoing operations aimed at curbing drug trafficking along the India-Myanmar border.

In a separate operation on Tuesday, police arrested another woman and confiscated heroin worth over ₹11.7 million. The special team of the Saitual District Executive Force (DEF) stopped a black Bolero Neo with a Manipur registration during a vehicle inspection in the Keifang area. The vehicle was en route from Churachandpur district in Manipur to Aizawl.

During the search, 587 grams of heroin were found concealed in 50 soap boxes within the clothing of 51-year-old Nengshi Haokip. The estimated market value of the seized drugs exceeds ₹11.7 million. Police also confiscated a Vivo mobile phone from the accused.

Officials stated that these successful operations reflect the state police’s commitment to combat cross-border trafficking and maintain peace and security in sensitive border areas.

It is noteworthy that Mizoram shares a 510-kilometer-long unfenced international border with Myanmar. The Chin state of Myanmar has long been considered a major transit route for drugs, wildlife, and other contraband.

Authorities indicate that the long and relatively open borders with Myanmar have positioned Mizoram and Manipur as key corridors for drug trafficking in Northeast India, facilitating the movement of narcotics and other illegal goods.
