Moscow, February 20: Russia has stated that Japan’s current stance is unfriendly, making the likelihood of any agreement between the two nations extremely low. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made this statement on Friday.
According to news agencies, Peskov remarked, “Tokyo is adopting an unfriendly posture towards our country. Under these circumstances, reaching any agreement is difficult unless there is a change in our relationship dynamics.”
Previously, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed during a policy speech in the lower house of Parliament that despite the tense bilateral relations, Japan still wishes to pursue a peace treaty with Russia.
Since World War II, Russia and Japan have not formalized a peace treaty, which has long affected their relations. Following Japan’s imposition of multiple rounds of sanctions against Russia over the Ukraine issue, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on March 21, 2022, the suspension of peace treaty negotiations with Tokyo.
Meanwhile, South Korea has strongly opposed Japan’s renewed territorial claims over islands disputed between the two countries. These islands are referred to as ‘Dokdo’ in South Korea and ‘Takeshima’ in Japan.
The South Korean Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing its firm opposition to the “unjust territorial claims” made by Japan’s Foreign Minister during a speech in Parliament (Diet) regarding Dokdo. The ministry demanded that Japan immediately retract such claims.
The statement clarified that Japan’s unjust claims over Dokdo would not affect South Korea’s sovereignty. It also warned that Seoul would respond strongly to any provocative actions from Japan.
South Korea reiterated that Dokdo is an integral part of its territory under historical, geographical, and international law, and that repeated claims by Japan will not aid in fostering future-oriented relations between Seoul and Tokyo.
