Neymar: Brazils Key Hope for FIFA World Cup Despite Fitness Challenges

New Delhi, May 23: Neymar is recognized as one of the most popular, talented, and wealthy footballers today. Despite being sidelined from the Brazilian national team due to injuries, this superstar has been selected for the Brazil squad for the FIFA World Cup 2026. This will mark Neymar’s fourth World Cup appearance. It will be intriguing to see if the 34-year-old can lead Brazil to reclaim the football championship, a feat last achieved in 2002.

Neymar made his debut for the Brazilian national team in 2010 at just 18 years old. Since then, his performance has consistently improved, establishing him as one of the world’s elite players alongside Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. He notably led Brazil to its first Olympic gold medal in 2016. Neymar has participated in the FIFA World Cups of 2014, 2018, and 2022, becoming Brazil’s top scorer and second-most capped player, with 79 goals in 128 matches.

In terms of his professional career, Neymar played for Barcelona from 2013 to 2017. In 2017, he transferred to Paris Saint-Germain for a record fee, becoming the most expensive player in football history. He remained with PSG until 2023 before joining Al Hilal, where he played only three matches. Since 2025, he has been part of Brazil’s Santos club.

Since 2018, Neymar’s career has been severely impacted by injuries. He has not played for Brazil since October 2023, raising doubts about his fitness for the upcoming World Cup. Nevertheless, he has secured a spot on the Brazilian team and is preparing for his fourth World Cup.

However, Neymar faced another injury after the team announcement, making his fitness crucial for Brazil’s success. He plays as an attacking midfielder or forward, renowned for his dribbling, technical skills, playmaking, and finishing abilities. When in form, he has the capability to break through opposing defenses and score, a talent that fans worldwide will be watching closely during the World Cup.

This may be Neymar’s last World Cup, and he aims to make this opportunity memorable for himself and his country. Brazil, the nation with the most World Cup titles at five, last won the championship in 2002.
